Organic Lawn Care

For the environmentally self-conscious, the important thing is to be aware of the concerns for the whole planet and yet act responsibly in the small things in one’s own life. To be a good citizen of planet earth we should look at every thing we do and find ways to "go green" as much as possible. It is ironic that one way to examine how to "go green" is to look at what you are doing to care for the largest area of green in your near vicinity, namely your yard.

It is only natural to want to surround ourselves with beautiful, green plants and flowers, so we can enjoy and feel in harmony with nature. Therefore it is good to know that you can have a lovely, lush green lawn and be environmentally responsible, also. The most important consideration is to plant and maintain our lawns in a way that is the most organic and natural.

Here is one tip for a more organic and natural looking lawn: keep your grass a little longer than usually. By mowing less, the stalks of grass get longer and taller and the extra quantity of grass aboveground makes more oxygen and is more organically healthy. You can still have a pretty expanse of green when the grass is taller. Another good thing about allowing your grass to grow a bit taller is the roots will grow down deeper. Deeper roots mean better hydration for your lawn. So now you know that taller grass is healthier grass.

Another aspect of "going green" is to have a look at the care and upkeep you perform on your lawn mower. A new lawn mower blade every year means a sharp blade that will cut through the grass cleanly. A dull blade may tear the grass, damaging it, which may cause injury and disease. A clean cut yard will be less likely to have brown spots and disease. You may also be able to find a lawn mower mechanic who can sharpen your blade annually instead of replacing it. These are some of the little things that add up to being more environmentally conscious.

Here is another lawn mower tip for you. When the old mower is worn out, consider replacing it with an electric mower instead of a gas-powered one. Gasoline-powered lawn mowers do put out poluting emissions, just like an automobile does. Granted it takes a bit more effort to use an electric mower because of the need to have a long enough extension cord to reach every part of your yard. There are also some electric mowers that use a battery, although they are heavier to push. Many homeowners have rather small yards anyway, and this can be a very practical and economic idea for them.

It makes sense that many of the organic approaches to lawn care and maintenance also save energy and money. By being environmentally aware of the consequences of your actions you are being a good citizen of the earth, and a responsible caretake of the green spaces within your power.
